Psytrance traces its roots to Goa, India, where in the late 1980s and early 1990s European and Israeli travellers brought acid house and early trance records to moonlit beach parties. DJs like Goa Gil played marathon sets that mixed ambient, industrial and early trance into something new. When the Goa scene producers — Hallucinogen, Astral Projection, Infected Mushroom — started making their own records around 1995, Goa trance was born, and when the BPMs pushed past 140 and the sound got darker and more psychedelic, the term psytrance took over.

The late 1990s saw the scene explode in Israel, Germany, Brazil and Japan. Labels like Dragonfly, Blue Room, TIP and later Nano Records and Iboga Records defined the sound. Psytrance split quickly: full-on was bright, melodic and euphoric; dark psy and forest were faster, heavier, more abstract; progressive psy sat closer to techno and used longer builds; and psychill covered the ambient down-time. By 2000 the genre had its own festival economy entirely separate from mainstream EDM.

Modern psytrance sits between 140 and 150 BPM for full-on, pushes to 150 to 160 for dark and forest, and drops to 130 for progressive psy. The defining sonic feature is the rolling 16th-note bassline that runs continuously under the kick, creating the hypnotic "tribal" feel that gives the genre its trance state.

A psytrance festival is its own universe. The scene has maintained a distinctly hippie and spiritual identity that most other EDM genres have shed: expect fractal art, yoga and meditation spaces, vegan food, healing areas, chai tents and market stalls selling UV-reactive clothing. Dress code is expressive — tie-dye, harem pants, face paint, kandi, elaborate costumes. The crowd is international in a way few other festivals are: Brazilians, Israelis, Germans, Portuguese and Dutch mix with travellers from every continent.

Programming is continuous. Most psytrance festivals run their main stage 24 hours a day across four to seven days, with morning full-on sets, afternoon progressive and chill sets, night-time dark psy and forest, and sunrise sets that are considered the sacred slots of the entire scene. The Ozora, Boom and Burning Mountain sunrise sets are booked months in advance and the artist chosen to play them gets the highest honour in the genre.

Production leans toward organic, wooden stage builds, hand-painted UV decor and visual projections rather than LED screens. The emphasis is on the environment, not the stage. First-timers should pace themselves — this is a multi-day trance state that rewards sustained attention rather than peak moments.

The full-on and progressive psy scene is led by Vini Vici, who crossed into mainstream EDM through the Tomorrowland main stage, alongside classic names like Infected Mushroom, Astrix, Ace Ventura, Captain Hook and Shpongle. Hallucinogen — Simon Posford's early project — remains canonical. Ajja, Hilight Tribe and Atmos represent the older full-on tradition.

Dark psy and forest have their own heroes: Kindzadza, Parasense, Psykovsky and the Russian scene around Osom Music. Progressive psy is led by Ace Ventura, Liquid Soul, Symbolic and Zen Mechanics. Psychill and ambient psy have Shpongle, Entheogenic and Kaya Project as reference points. The Israeli scene remains one of the most productive globally, with labels like Iboga and Yellow Sunshine Explosion feeding a constant stream of new artists.

Subgenres often have entirely separate festivals. A full-on fan might never attend a forest festival and vice versa. The crossover artists — Vini Vici, Astrix, Ace Ventura — are the ones most likely to appear at mainstream dance festivals, which is how many newcomers first encounter the genre.
