EDM — electronic dance music — is used in two senses. Broadly, it covers all electronic dance genres from Detroit techno to UK garage to Rotterdam hardcore. Narrowly, and more commonly in American and mainstream European usage, it refers to the main-stage festival sound that emerged around 2008 to 2012: big-room house, electro house and progressive house fused into something designed for 100,000-person crowds. This piece uses the narrow sense, because that is what people mean when they type "EDM festival" into a search bar.

The genre's modern form was forged at American festivals. Electric Daisy Carnival moving to Las Vegas in 2011, Ultra Music Festival scaling up in Miami, and the rise of Tomorrowland in Boom, Belgium, from 2005 onward created a global main-stage circuit that needed a specific kind of track: 128 BPM, huge synth leads, long builds, snare rolls, white-noise risers and massive drops. Producers like Avicii, Swedish House Mafia, Afrojack, Hardwell, Nicky Romero, Steve Aoki and David Guetta built their careers on this template between 2009 and 2014.

The EDM era peaked commercially around 2014, then fragmented as house, techno and bass scenes pulled audiences back toward underground sounds. The main-stage EDM format never went away, though — it remains the sound of Tomorrowland's main stage, Ultra's Worldwide Stage and the biggest single-day festivals globally. The current iteration blends main-stage EDM with future bass, melodic bass, Brazilian phonk, afro house and hardstyle crossovers, but the core formula is still recognisable.

EDM festivals are the biggest production experiences in live music. Tomorrowland's main stage, the Ultra Europe stage in Split, Creamfields' Arc and the Mysteryland main stage are arena rock shows at festival scale: pyro, CO2, fire, lasers, LED walls, drones, fireworks. The visual spectacle is a core part of the experience, sometimes more memorable than any individual track. First-timers should expect to be overwhelmed in the first ten minutes.

Crowds are the most diverse in dance music. Ages range from 18 to 45, nationalities from everywhere, and the dress code is maximalist: flower crowns, festival bikinis, kandi bracelets, Tomorrowland-branded wristbands, bucket hats, face gems, matching outfits for groups. This is the genre where people dress up most and where first-time festival-goers feel most welcome.

Set times are structured around anthems. Main-stage sets are usually one hour long, built around a sequence of peaks with constant crowd interaction, live vocal runs, confetti cannons on cue and breakdowns designed for 100,000 people to sing along. There is no slow burn — the energy starts high and stays there. Hydrate constantly, use the shaded chill-out areas between stages, and plan set conflicts in advance. The FOMO at a major EDM festival is real.

The modern EDM main-stage A-list is led by Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, Hardwell (returned from retirement), Timmy Trumpet, Alesso, Afrojack, Armin van Buuren and Steve Aoki. Calvin Harris sits in the pop-EDM crossover space. Marshmello, The Chainsmokers and Zedd operate at the future bass and pop end. Skrillex crosses from dubstep into the broader EDM main stage.

Newer headliners include Sub Zero Project crossing from hardstyle, Vini Vici from psytrance, Lost Frequencies from melodic house, and HI-LO (Oliver Heldens's techno alias) bringing techno into main-stage rotation. Brennan Heart, Da Tweekaz and the whole hardstyle elite regularly play main stages at Tomorrowland and Parookaville. The genre has become a curatorial umbrella rather than a pure style.

Subgenres are blurred but recognisable. Big-room and festival house are the classic 2012 sound. Future bass — Flume, Illenium, Seven Lions — is softer and more melodic. Electro house and progressive house still dominate. Mainstage hardstyle crossovers are common. Future rave, a hybrid pushed by David Guetta and MORTEN, is the current commercial mutation of the EDM formula.
