worth your weekend.

Melodic techno is a relatively young genre, formalised around 2012 to 2014 in Berlin as a hybrid of techno, progressive house and deep house. Its founding label was Afterlife, launched by Italian duo Tale Of Us (Carmine Conte and Matteo Milleri) in 2016, with Innervisions — Dixon and Ame's label founded in 2005 — providing the deeper, more emotional template that the newer producers built on. The sound was a deliberate reaction against the harder, drier peak-time techno dominating Berghain and the German scene: longer builds, more melody, more cinematic atmosphere.

The genre's breakthrough came with tracks like Tale Of Us's "Unity" and "Silent Space," Mind Against's "Walking Away" and Artbat's "Return to Oz" remix, which crossed from the underground into main-stage rotation between 2017 and 2019. Afterlife events at Printworks London and Fabrika Rome established the visual template: dark open spaces, laser architecture, silhouetted DJs against enormous projection mapping, and six-to-eight-hour sets that built across emotional arcs rather than peak-drop structures.

Modern melodic techno sits around 122 to 126 BPM — slower than peak-time techno, similar to progressive house — with prominent melodic leads, arpeggiated synths and emotional vocal samples. The genre has been criticised by techno purists for being closer to progressive house than to Detroit lineage, but its festival impact over the last decade is undeniable.

A melodic techno set is a cinematic experience. The best events lean into this: Afterlife at Tulum, Printworks or Hï Ibiza have stage builds that look more like contemporary art installations than club rigs. Expect laser forests, heavy fog, minimal stage lighting on the DJ, and projections that sync tightly with the music. The crowd dresses accordingly — mostly black, often minimal, with the occasional Afterlife or Diynamic T-shirt as a scene marker.

The audience skews slightly older and more international than peak-time techno. It is not uncommon to see couples, first-time festival-goers and techno tourists at the same stage. Set times reward late programming: Tale Of Us's headline sets typically run from 2 am to 6 am and the emotional peak of the set tends to land somewhere around 4 am, as the night tips toward dawn. Daytime melodic techno sets exist but the genre belongs to the late hours.

Crowd behaviour is focused rather than expressive. Arms go up during the breakdowns, phones come out during the big moments, and the floor stays tight through the long middle sections of sets. First-timers should come prepared for extended, atmospheric build-ups and should expect the emotional payoffs to arrive without warning.

Tale Of Us is the genre's defining act, though the duo announced their split in 2023 with both members continuing solo as Mind Against adjacent projects. The Afterlife roster — Mind Against, Mathame, Colyn, Stephan Bodzin, Adriatique, Massano, Agents Of Time — forms the core of the contemporary scene. Dixon and Ame, through Innervisions, provided the older blueprint and continue to tour.

Artbat, Solomun, Adriatique, Mano Le Tough, ANNA, Amelie Lens at her more melodic moments, and Maceo Plex at his Mosaic label events all operate in the melodic techno orbit. Kolsch brought a Scandinavian emotional edge to the sound. Stephan Bodzin's synth-heavy live shows push the genre toward full melodic performance. Keinemusik's &ME, Rampa and Adam Port overlap with melodic techno even though they are usually classed as Afro house.

Subgenre lines are porous. Melodic techno, melodic house and progressive house all program the same artists and often share festival stages. The unifying feature is the emphasis on melody and emotional narrative over pure rhythm, which is what separates it from the Detroit and Berlin techno lineages that share its name.
